CELI General Italian Certification

The Certificates of Italian Language’s Knowledge (CELI) are certificates of general Italian language which are addressed to educated adults. This document assesses the competence of the Italian language skills, and is expendable in work environment and study.

CELI exams are divided in different categories according to the type of user: General CELI, CELI for Immigrants, and CELI for adolescents.

The distinction between those three is principally made in terms of texts and exercises, which are selected according to experiential characteristics in order to match the needs of every type of users, leaving substantially unchanged the methods used during the exam.

These different levels of Certificate have in common the reference to the levels of QCER, the method of verification (The one traditionally used in the context of certification) and the same rigour to follow the phases of the elaboration process of the certification’s exam.

The Minister of Education, University and Research recognises CELI 3 as a valid certificate to attests the knowledge of the Italian language, required to apply for an Italian University.

CELI 4 and CELI 5 are also recognised as valid certificates to attest the level of knowledge of the Italian language at the same conditions as the Italian students. Every University can , of course, require a specific admission test.

The Minister of Work and Social Politics recognises CELI certificate in a contest of immigration and facilitates the spread through the promotion of events specialised on Italian language’s learning, addressed to non-EU citizens, adults and minors, properly residing in Italy.

Both the Greek and Turkish state recognise CELI certificate as a valid linguistic title in the public administration.

CELI Certifications are articulated in 6 levels on the model of the European Common Framework of Reference for Languages (QCER)

Three exam sessions are planned within the year: one in March (only for CELI Impact, CELI 1, CELI 2 and CELI 3) June and November.
